LAGOS STATE GOVT CAUTIONS ON CONVERSION OF PETROL GENERATORS TO GAS POWERED

The Lagos State Government has advised Lagosians on the safe conversion of PMS engines into LPG for domestic use.

The Director General of the Lagos State Safety Commission, Lanre Mojola emphasized the state government’s commitment to ensuring the safety of its citizens and their properties. In light of the recent removal of subsidies and subsequent increase in petrol prices, there has been a significant rise in the conversion of petrol generators in homes and offices to LPG generators.

Mojola highlighted the benefits of using alternative fuels like Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG) or Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) for powering generators and plants:

1. CNG and LPG are generally more cost-effective than petrol, leading to potential long-term savings.
2. These fuels are cleaner and have less impact on air quality compared to petrol and diesel.
3. Natural gas and LPG are often more abundant and domestically sourced in certain regions, providing greater fuel availability and reducing dependency on petrol prices or supply disruptions.
4. CNG and LPG combustion produce less noise, making them suitable for residential use and reducing noise pollution.

“The Lagos State Government wants to raise awareness among the general public about the safety hazards and risks involved in the conversion process and the use of LPG-powered generators at homes and offices. These hazards include:

I. Fire outbreaks can occur if there is a gas leakage from the hose or cylinder valve due to sparks or heat from the generator.
II. Improperly ventilated generator houses can lead to gas leaks accumulating in enclosed spaces, increasing the risk of explosions.
III. Improper handling of high-pressure LPG cylinders can result in potential explosions.”

Speaking also, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Shola Shasore said that it is important to note that converting a petrol generator to use alternative and less expensive fuels may require modifications and the installation of appropriate conversion kits by qualified professionals.
