‘MY GOAL IS TO BECOME OLUBADAN…,’ LADOJA SPEAKS ON IBADAN CHIEFTAINCY ROW
By Adeniyi Onaara
High Chief Rashidi Ladoja, former governor of Oyo State and the Otun Olubadan, broke his silence on Wednesday on the recent review of Ibadan Chieftaincy law, saying his desire when he joined the Olubadan line was not to become a lesser king but the Olubadan of Ibadanland.
He went on to say that he just wants to be a paramount Olubadan, not a “elevated” Oba.
Remember that Governor Seyi Makinde recently signed into law the Chieftaincy Amendment Bill, which gave him the authority to distribute beaded crowns and coronets to Olubadan-in-Council in the state.
The governor is claimed to have agreed to the high chiefs’ promotion, and they will be officially installed as traditional rulers on Friday, July 7, 2023.
But, addressing at his Bodija home after attending Eid prayers at the University of Ibadan (UI) Muslim praying ground, Ladoja stated that there is no need to change what is not damaged.
“Nothing has changed, you don’t mend what isn’t broken, it’s not fair to elevate high chiefs to Obas, my focus is to become Olubadan, not a lesser Oba.”
“I don’t think having high chiefs as obas is fair.” Who are you up against? It’s not in our culture.”
“Ladoja is not interested in wearing an elevated crown,” he said.
