UPDATE: POLICE CONFIRMS KILLING OF ENUGU LAWMAKER BY GUNMEN
The death of Mr. Nelson Sylvester, a councilor for the Eha-Ulo ward in the Nsukka Local Government Area Legislative Council, Enugu State, has been verified by the Enugu State Police Command.
Gunmen shot and killed Sylvester, also known as Ofunwa, on Sunday night at his home in the Eha-Alumonah neighborhood.
Although DSP Daniel Ndukwe, the police public relations officer, told our correspondent that the incident happened, he withheld further information.
Ndukwe promised to release a comment on the occurrence despite claiming that an investigation into the horrific crime had been initiated.
It was learnt that the assailants broke into the lawmaker’s home and began shooting at him.
The Councilor fled the attack and entered a neighboring compound, where he was shot and killed, according to a local source.
“After the attack, residents searched for him at his house but could not find him. We felt he had escaped but unfortunately, we saw his lifeless body in the backyard of a neighboring compound.
“The killing is one too many. it is heartbreaking; it is too hard for us to swallow. We are in deep agony,” the source mentioned.
Since no one could determine why he was killed, the development has caused friction in the town and other nearby communities.
