The Lagos State Police command on Tuesday, handed over two suspects and bags 0f illicit drugs it intercepted to officials of the National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

The Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, CP Idowu Owohunwa, handed over the drugs to the Assistant Commander of Narcotics, Joseph Setonji while signing the handover note.

At the Police headquarters in Ikeja, Hundeyin, handed over 10 bags containing illicit substance and vehicle recovered to the NDLEA Official.

Recall that on 17th of July, 2023, Hundeyin, announced in a statement that, Operatives of Aswani Division of the Lagos State Police Command intercepted substances suspected to be Indian Hemp along Mushin, Isolo road.

The interception occurred on Wednesday July 12, 2023 at about 2356hrs during routine stop-and-search, leading to the arrest of Fidelis Otiga ‘m’ and Chukwuma Kennedy ‘m’ aged 49 and 50 respectively, in whose vehicle the drugs were found.

The illicit drugs with street value of Thirteen Million Naira (N13,000,000.00) were being conveyed in a Toyota Sienna car with registration number KJA 118 HV.

He also, assured in the report that diligent investigation and prosecution will be done.

The Police spokesperson stated that the force, through the seizure has taken some sacks of drugs off the market as well as, joining in waging war against illicit drugs, for the good of the nation and its youths.

“We carried out a swift operation and successfully intercepted these drugs with the cooperation from members of the publish. We are happy to know that at least 10 sacks of these hard drugs are off the society and it won’t get into the hands of our vulnerable youths.

We have done our investigation to an extent, and we deem it wise and fit to handover these suspects and exhibits to the NDLEA to carry on  and conclude the investigation and have these suspects prosecuted.

This goes to underscore the importance and the premium we place on inter-agency collaboration. We have a very robust synergy in Lagos Stare and because the menace of drug abuse is something we have to fight jointly, we are taking advantage of that to handover the suspects. We assure Nigerians and Lagosians in particular, that we would not relent in combating the menace of drug abuse, so that it will not aid other criminal act like Cultism which is largely fueled by drug abuse.”

Speaking, Joseph Setonji, commended the police for the synergy in ridding the state of harmful drugs adding that, no single Agency, can fight the war.

He added that one challenge the Agency is facing is lack of information from the public.

He said, “we are here to take over these suspects and exhibits, and this is to show the synergy between the NDLEA and the Police. This is also, to show the public that fighting this war, is not a one agency war but the war of everyone of us.

We need information from the public and to tell you the truth, any information we receive regarding drug trafficking, we treat it as special.”

CP Owohunwa, however, assured Lagosians, that under his stewardship, partnership would continue with members of the society and the NDLEA to combat the menace, in other to have a better and safer society for everyone.
