By F.A. Oduola
The 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup have finally gotten underway as co-host New Zealand beat Norway 1-0 on Thursday Morning opening match.
The Super Falcons start their own tournament on Friday with first test coming against highly-rated Canadian squad.
The Olympic champions, stand 33 places above Nigeria in the FIFA rankings, making them heavy favourites for the opener.
Super Falcons, who have an impressive African record—winning the Women’s African Cup of Nations title a record 11 times and making it to every world cup—haven’t fared well in the biggest competition in the women’s football.
They have just twice progressed past the group stage, including reaching the quarterfinals in 1999, and have won just four times in their last 26 World Cup matches.
Canada, on the other hand, boast eight appearances in the World Cup. Their best performance saw them reach the semifinals in 2003, but they faltered in their first knockout stage game four years ago.
They will also face Australia and Republic of Ireland in their group B encounters.
