SENATE TO FG, NLC OVER PROPOSED NATIONWIDE STRIKE
By Aishat Momoh. O.
The Senate urged its leadership on Monday to meet with the Federal Government and the Nigeria Labour Congress to avoid a statewide strike.
The NLC had given the Federal Government until Wednesday, August 2, 2023, to reverse the elimination of fuel subsidies or face a statewide strike.
The Labour Party is presently mobilizing its affiliate unions to ensure the success and totality of the strike.
The Senate resolution followed a motion filed by Senator Sulaiman Kawu (NNPP-Kano South) captioned “Urgent need to avert an impending nationwide strike called by the Nigeria Labour Congress over the removal of fuel subsidies.”
In his opening debate, Kawu maintained that allowing the strike to continue would be disastrous for the country’s economy.
The proposal was supported by Senators Isah Jibrin, Seriake Dickson, and Solomon Adeola.
They urged the NLC to abandon the impending strike and allow the Federal Government to implement palliative measures to alleviate people’s suffering.
“The motion is timely, and every reasonable Nigerian would not want us to go on strike again,” stated Isah Jibrin (APC, Kogi East).
āA strike usually has intended and unintended consequences both on the rich and the poor.
Appeal to labour unions to shelve the strike.ā
Senator Solomon also pleaded with the NLC to give the administration more time because pro-people policies such as palliative care and an increase in the minimum wage were in the works.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio has urged local and state governments to collaborate to alleviate people’s suffering. We cannot continue to spend 98% of our revenue on gasoline subsidies.
