By Oduola F.A.
South Africa’s Banyana Banyana has qualified for their first-ever knockout round of the FIFA Women’s World Cup after defeating Italy 3-2 in their final Group G game.
The African champions becomes the second African team to progress into the round of 16 after Nigeria’s Super Falcons.
Going into the Wednesday match, Sout Africa needed an outright win while a draw was enough for Italy.
Italy took the lead in the 11th minute through Arianna Caruso’s penalty before Benedetta Orsi’s own goal leveled the scoring in South Africa’s favour in the 32nd minute.
In the 67th minute Hilda Magaia put South Africa 2-1 ahead but Caruso got her second to pull Italy level on 74 minutes.
But in the 92nd minute Thembi Kgatlana netted the winner to send her team into the knockout stage.
South Africa will now face Netherlands for their round of 16 encounter on Sunday.
