The Lagos State Ministry of Basic Education has begun offering specific Science, Technical, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics programs to junior and senior secondary school students in Lagos.

According to Mr. Abayomi Abolaji, Permanent Secretary of the newly renamed Ministry of Basic Education, the program is ”organized to take advantage of the long vacation to further encourage students on the need to be well grounded in sciences,” in line with the vision of Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu’s administration.

”Though the STEAM holiday class is not a full-fledged learning session that covers as many subjects, it is purposefully meant to channel the energy of students for productive activities, creativity, and invention,” he added.

This will be accomplished by studying science subjects and gaining experience in skill acquisition.

This was revealed by Mr. Abolaji during an interview session about what the State government is doing to keep pupils active during the lengthy break.

The 2023 STEAM Vacation Course (SVC) program began on Monday, July 31st, at 308 secondary schools throughout six education districts and will end on Friday, August 25th.

The Permanent Secretary also disclosed that as part of preparation for school resumption in September, the Ministry has commenced transfer excise into JS2 and SS1 classes for students who wished to change their schools due to relocation and other valid reasons. Interested students are expected to forward application for transfer to the Office of the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Basic Education and fulfill other requirements as may be required before 31st of August 2023.

He advised parents to seize the opportunity of the holiday to strengthen family bond, impart moral and cultural values in their children to stem indiscipline and other vices.
