Justice S. M. Akanbi of the Kwara State High Court in Ilorin condemned one Mohammed Kazeem Beiwa to death for the murder of his neighbor, Olokose Ojo Olushola, in Ilorin just days before his wedding in 2021.

The court also sentenced his two other accomplices, Madu Jeremiah and Mohammed Chatta, to ten years in prison and a N100,000 fine each, while the fourth defendant, Jimoh Abdulateef, was released for lack of diligence in prosecution.

The four accused were facing eight-count accusations in court, including criminal conspiracy, kidnapping, culpable homicide, illegal possession of guns, and illegal removal of human parts.

The prosecution, led by Senior Ibrahim Sulyman, former Attorney General and Commissioner of Justice of Kwara State, stated that the four accused defendants attacked and kidnapped the victim, Olokose Ojo Olushola, in his Ilorin home a few days before his wedding and murdered him sometime in 2021.

The accused, after kidnapping, killing, and dismembering the victim, negotiated a ransom payment from his family, knowing he was already dead, as the prosecution testified in court.

During the case’s trial, the prosecution brought nine witnesses and presented various exhibits to the court.

On Monday, Justice Akanbi handed down her decision in the case, finding three of the accused defendants guilty of all four criminal accusations made against them.

He confirmed that “the defendants killed one Olokose Ojo Olushola sometime in March 2021, a few days before the deceased’s wedding ceremony.”

“The body was mutilated and despite knowing of the death of the said Olushola Olokose, the defendants still demanded ransom from the family of the deceased making it appear their victim was alive and held hostage by kidnappers.

“The first defendant Mohammed Kazeem Beiwa who masterminded the horrific tragedy and was also a neighbour of the deceased was sentenced to death by hanging life imprisonment, and 10 years imprisonment with N100,000 fine on different counts.”
