SPORT: BRIGHTON HIT MAN UTD AS OLD TRAFFORD CRISIS MOUNTS
Troubled As Brighton unexpectedly defeated Manchester United 3-1 at Old Trafford in Saturday’s Premier League match, Manchester United’s predicament grew worse.
Danny Welbeck, a former United forward, scored in the first half to shock Erik ten Hag’s team, and Brighton went on to score more goals in the second half from Pascal Gross and Joao Pedro.
United was jeered off at the final whistle, and Hannibal Mejbri’s first goal for the team was no solace.
After losing 3-1 at Arsenal before the break, it was United’s second straight defeat.
United, which is now in 12th position and has lost three of its first five league games this season, has the appearance of a team that is in disarray both on and off the field.
When Ten Hag broke United’s six-year trophy drought by winning the League Cup and advancing to the Champions League in his debut season, he appeared to have stabilised the team last year.
However, following a poor start to the new campaign, title chances are already dwindling, and Wednesday’s daunting Champions League match against Bayern Munich poses a threat to make matters worse for Manchester United.
Ten Hag asserted this week that he arrived at Old Trafford after leaving Ajax to discover “no good culture” among the team in reaction to an uptick in player conduct issues.
Jadon Sancho, the exiled striker, may or may not play again for United, according to Ten Hag’s statement on Friday.
The England player enraged Ten Hag when he claimed he was being used as a “scapegoat” after being benched for the loss to Arsenal, and as a result, Sancho has been sent to practice separately from United’s first squad.
Although he vehemently denies the accusations of domestic violence levelled against him by three women, United forward Antony is now on leave of absence.
Weeks before Antony’s issues, domestic abuse allegations against Mason Greenwood led to his forced loan departure from United to Spanish club Getafe. Those charges were ultimately dropped.
