DEATH TOLL: OVER 200 KILLED IN ISRAEL AS HAMAS ‘MASSACRED CIVILIANS’
By Aishat Momoh. O.
More than 200 Israelis have died as a result of the surprise Hamas offensive on Saturday, the IDF reported, accusing the insurgents of “massacring civilians” by breaking into homes.
The army stated that “terrorists rampaged and broke into homes, massacring civilians,” and that the dawn-time attack resulted in more than 200 fatalities and more than 1,000 injuries.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed to exact revenge for what he called a “black day” for Israel, announcing that the army would retaliate against the Gaza-based Hamas militant group with all of its might.
In a brief televised statement, Netanyahu stated, “The IDF (army) is about to use all its force to destroy Hamas’s capabilities.”
“We’ll strike them to the bitter end and avenge with force this black day they brought on Israel and its people,” he said, after Hamas militants launched a surprise dawn attack, sending hundreds of militants into Israel under cover of a huge rocket barrage.
After Hamas launched a massive offensive against Israel on Saturday, firing thousands of missiles from Gaza and dispatching terrorists to kill and kidnap troops and civilians, gun engagements continued well into the night.
After 50 years since the start of the Arab-Israeli War in 1973, the attack represents the first time a combined ground, air, and sea operation has been launched.
“We are at war,” Netanyahu said to the shocked nation as the army reacted by shelling targets in the blockaded enclave, where numerous residential tower blocks were reduced to ruins.
