2500 LAGOS WOMEN HAVE BENEFITTED FROM OUNJE LORE AWO PROGRAMME SO FAR – COMMISSIONER

The Lagos State Commissioner of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Hon. Mrs Cecilia Bolaji Dada, has disclosed that about 2500 women have benefitted from the Multidimensional Approach on Good Nutrition ‘Ounje Lore Awo’ Programme, presently going on in the State.
The Commissioner revealed this, during the programme which was organized by the Ministry, to address the issues of Food Security and balanced dietary habits, particularly with a view to reducing the level of malnutrition amongst the women of Lagos State.
While giving her opening remarks at the Surulere Local Government on Wednesday, Hon. Dada said that, due to the increased nutritional requirements related to menstruation, pregnancy, and lactation, women and adolescent girls confront a significant challenge in maintaining a balanced diet. This is demonstrated by the high incidence of anaemia, which affects around 613 million women worldwide, or 33% of women of reproductive age.
Dada restated that however difficult it is to access healthy and nutritious food, it us also important that everyone must make a conscious effort to prioritize their health and wellbeing.
Mrs. Bukola Popoola, a nutritionist and the facilitator of the programme, while speaking, advised that women should cultivate the habit of growing their own food, however small it can be, as she noted that cultivating this crops (fruits and vegetables) in their homes will not only guarantee nutritious food but also will instill a sense of self-sufficiency and Pride.
Mrs. Popoola, warned against buying and eating unhealthy foods which could cause health hazards instead, “drink lots of water, eat lots of fruits and vegetables, reduce fried foods and be moderate with the intake of some food”, she stated.
Meanwhile, Mrs.Oluyemi Kolesanwo, said the essence of the program is to advocate on food and nutrition for the women in the state while imploring the women to know the benefits of proper nutrition.
She said, “This is an advocacy program on food and nutrition for women in the state, that is, proper nutrition for our women, so that they will know the kind of food they feed their families with.
We have been to Epe, Lagos Island East, Badagry, Ajeromi-Ifelodun, Bariga and Ikeja. We have been able to reach about 2500 women so far, and we will still do more,” she concluded.
In his remarks, the Executive Chairman of Surulere Local Government, Hon. Bamidele Yusuf Balogun, commended the state Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu and the Ministry of Women Affairs for providing nutritional food items for women in his jurisdiction.
Beneficiaries were given packs containing food items like, Rice, Beans, Chicken, Eggs, Oil amongst others.
One of the beneficiaries who is a nursing mother, expressed her gratitude to the Lagos State Government and the organizers for the opportunity to be a part of the programme.
She said, “I am very happy and grateful to be a part of this program. I learnt how to eat healthy in other to be able to breast feed my child with nutritious food that will help him grow. I want to say a very big thank you.”
