S’COURT VERDICT: THE DREAM FOR A NEW NIGERIA HAS NOT ENDED – PETER OBI
Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s (LP) presidential candidate for 2023, stated on Monday that the Supreme Court’s decision from October 26, 2023, does not put a stop to his vision of a new Nigeria.
About two weeks after the Supreme Court upheld President Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress’ election victory on February 25, 2023, Obi addressed a press conference in Abuja. (APC).
Even though Obi disagreed with the Supreme Court’s ruling, he acknowledged that the legal dispute surrounding the previous election is now over.
Speaking to his followers, referred to as “Obidients,” the former Anambra State governor stated that a destination is merely a journey rather than an event.
The 62-year-old billionaire claimed that his quest for a new Nigeria was not yet over, even though he did not specifically say whether he would run for president again in 2027 when he spoke to the media with his running mate, Datti Baba-Ahmed.
Obi appreciated “the energy and dedication of Nigerian youths and the Obidient movement”.
He said, “I want to assure them that this is not the end of our journey but in fact the beginning. Nigerians heard you, the world has taken note and we will not forget easily. We shall endure, persist until we reach our destination because new Nigeria is our destination. A destination is not an event.”
Obi and Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) had appealed Tinubu’s election victory all the way to the Supreme Court.
Atiku and Obi, dissatisfied with the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal’s (PEPT) ruling from earlier in September, petitioned the Supreme Court to declare Tinubu’s election invalid for a number of reasons, including double nomination, suspected certificate forgery, failure to transmit results electronically, and 25% of votes cast in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
On Thursday, the penultimate day, the panel of the Supreme Court led by Justice John Okoro dismissed all of Atiku and Obi’s petitions due to their lack of substance. The commission then confirmed Tinubu’s election victory.
