UPDATE: NLC, TUC IN EXTRAORDINARY NEC MEETING OVER PLANNED STRIKE
An unusual National Executive Council meeting was called by the leadership of organised labour, which includes the Trade Union Congress (TUC) and the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), on Tuesday in Abuja.
The planned strike by organised labour over the brutalization of NLC National President Joe Ajaero last week was the main topic of discussion during the labour leaders’ meeting, it was learned.
The leaders of the NEC will also discuss the Memorandum of Understanding that was signed on October 2, 2023, between the Federal Government and organised labor. This comes after President Bola Tinubu removed the petrol subsidy in May, which had dire consequences that included rising food prices and inflation.
The Imo State Commissioner of Police, Mohammed Barde, was accused by organised labour of participating in the recent attack on Ajaero in the Imo State capital of Owerri. This accusation caused significant indignation.
In addition to blaming Governor Hope Uzodimma, who is up for reelection, for the attack on Ajaero, organised labour gave the federal government a five-day ultimatum last Friday to replace the police commissioner. However, the governor later claimed he had no involvement in the attack on the labour leader.
Additionally, organised labour asked that some of the governor’s aides be taken into custody and prosecuted. If their demands were not met, they threatened to launch a statewide work stoppage.
Already, the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, on Sunday, redeployed Barde for “neutrality sake” ahead of the November 11, 2023 governorship election in Imo State.
