ARMED BANDITS ATTACK ZAMFARA COMMUNITIES, ABDUCTS OVER 100 RESIDENTS
Over a hundred people were kidnapped by armed bandits on Friday in Zamfara State’s Maru Local Government Area, the majority of whom were women and children.
According to information obtained, the bandits raided four villages in the Maru Local Government Area: Mutumji, Sabongari Mahuta, Kwanar Dutsi, and Unguwar Kawo. These villages were all under levies that the people were required to pay.
Our correspondent was informed by sources in Mutumji that the bandits broke into the community after prayers at 8 p.m. and began firing intermittently, sending the locals running for their lives.
Locals claimed that Damina, the local bandit chief, had imposed a N110 million “harvesting levy” on these communities and given them two weeks’ notice to comply and pay.
It was gathered that Mutumji was subject to a N50 million charge, Kwanar Dutsi to a N30 million levy, Sabongari Mahuta to a N20 million levy, and Unguwar Kawo to a N10 million levy.
According to a second local source, after the terrorist attack on Friday night, the villages began collecting money.
There were multiple unsuccessful attempts to acquire responses from the state’s police force and government.
Just one week had passed since 15 people were kidnapped in the same local government’s Ruwandoruwa neighborhood.
