The athletes who will compete in the second National Para Games edition, which will begin in Abuja on Friday, December 8, 2023, have been urged by the Federal Government to step up and take the lead from the athletes who have made Nigeria proud over the years, as those athletes will soon surpass them.

A few hours before the second iteration of the National Para Games, scheduled for 2023, got underway, the Honourable Minister of Sports Development, Senator John Owan Enoh, made the call today at his office at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja.

Stars like Yakubu Adesokan, Lucy Ejike, Esther Onyeama, Eucharia Iyiazi, and others have performed well for Team Nigeria over the years, but as their careers come to an end, there is a need to fill the anticipated void. This was said by Senator Owan Enoh.

He clarified that every person, regardless of physical prowess, ought to have the chance to realise his or her full sporting potential. The National Para Games, he continued, are evidence of this philosophy, and we are thrilled to see future champions come to life.’

The Minister said that the National Para Games serve as a platform to highlight the extraordinary talent and tenacity of our athletes with disabilities, as well as a venue for competition and medal-winning. Senator Owan Enoh stated, “We are sure that this event will uncover new stars who will go on to achieve great things for the nation on the international stage.”

The Minister expressed hope that the occasion will be a huge success and that it will advance parasports in the nation and promote inclusivity.

He said that Nigeria had won an incredible 80 medals at the Paralympic Games since the Barcelona 1992 Games, including 40 gold, 19 silver, and 20 bronze medals.

Approximately 3000 athletes and officials from the 36 states of the Federation, including the Federal Capital Territory of Abuja, will compete in the competition’s second edition, according to information revealed by Senator Owan Enoh.
