UPDATE: NBA WINS SUIT AGAINST EX-WOMEN AFFAIRS MINISTER, DAME TALLEN
In Suit No. CV/816/2016, a high court in the Federal Capital Territory decided on Monday in favour of the Nigerian Bar Association’s (NBA) Incorporated Trustees and against Dame Tallen, a former minister of women’s affairs.
As a result, the Court ruled that Tallen’s aforementioned statement was unconstitutional, thoughtless, irresponsible, derogatory, a call to disregard the court’s decision, and, as such, disrespectful of the Federal High Court of Nigeria.
Along with other reliefs, the Court issued an injunction barring the former minister from holding any public office in Nigeria until she atones for her actions by writing a letter of apology, personally signed, to the judiciary and Nigerians that takes up a full page in two national newspapers.
The court issued an order mandating that if the defendant does not publish an apology letter within 30 days, the injunction prohibiting her from holding any public office in Nigeria will become permanent.
The NBA Incorporated Trustees served Tallen with an originating summons on December 14, 2022, regarding her remarks made in public regarding the Federal High Court’s ruling in Suit No. FHC/YL/12/2022, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu v. All Progressives Congress (APC) & 2 Ors, which was delivered on October 14, 2022. Tallen was the Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development at the time.
The court ruling was referred to by Tallen as “a kangaroo judgement that should be rejected by well-meaning Nigerians” on October 15, 2022.
The NBA President, Yakubu Maikyau, demanded in a letter dated November 14, 2022, that the minister retract the offensive remarks and offer the Court an unconditional public apology. But the claims made therein were not met, which is why the Federal Capital Territory High Court filed Suit No. CV/816/2016.
