In an attempt to break the Guinness World Record (GWR), Nigerian crochetist and social entrepreneur, Chidinma Okafor, has commenced her 72-hour crochet-a-thon today.

She kicked off around 2:00pm on Sunday, December 24th.

The crocheting marathon will go on until December 27 at GOGE Africa in Maryland, Lagos.

Crochet is a needlework technique which involves looping thread through a hooked needle. It entails working with varying numbers of loops on the hook to create various stitches.

The 30-year-old crocheter intends to knit a wedding gown during this crochet-a-thon.

Chidinma, who is ecstatic about breaking the record, told The Nation that she had prepared to break the record because it would allow her to realize a lifelong dream.

However, the longest marathon crocheting time was held by Alessandra Hayden of Gig Harbor, Washington, USA, in November 2023, with a staggering 34 hours and 7 minutes.

Hayden attempted knitting a blanket, which she later gave to her daughter’s school auction. A friend purchased the blanket for $2,000 and returned it to Hayden as a gift.

Inspired by Nigerian chef Hilda Baci’s world record for the longest cooking marathon, many young people in Nigeria have been trying to set or break records in a variety of life domains.

Chidinma stated that her family has been incredibly supportive and encouraging of her attempt to break the record.

She added that she took up crocheting as a hobby when she was very young and eventually developed a strong passion for making various dresses and accessories.
