The Chairman of the Police Service Commission, Solomon Arase, has reminded serving officers of the Nigeria Police Force that they would retire one day and become civilians, asking them to be friendly.

This comes in response to the retired Inspector General of Police’s call for officers to recommit to serving their country in 2024.

In his message for the new year, Arase expressed gratitude to the Nigeria Police Force’s officers and staff, as well as the Commission’s staff for “the sacrifices in the course of their duty and for holding the nation together and providing relative peace across the country.”

However, he called for reciprocal gestures by the officers ā€œby creating friendly relationships with the citizens so that they can benefit from information sharingā€ that could enhance intelligence gathering.

Arase said, ā€œOfficers should understand that they have a date with history and will retire and leave the service one day and also become civilians.ā€

While stating that the cops deserved commendations ā€œfor their dedication to dutyā€, he called for greater dedication in the new year.

In addition, the PSC boss promised that the commission will ensure that ā€œthe welfare of the Officers will receive the attention of the Commission in the new year to serve as motivation for improved service delivery.ā€

A statement posted on the PSC website on Sunday quoted the PSC Chairman promising that ā€œpromotion of Officers will continue to be regular and predictable,ā€ adding that ā€œthe Commission will do all it can to make Police work in Nigeria attractive once again.ā€

Furthermore, Arase called for the continuation of the strategic partnership between the Commission and the Nigeria police, which he said, has since started to deliver dividends.

ā€œDr. Arase prayed that the year 2024 will be a turning point in the lives of Nigerians. He wished Nigerians a happy and prosperous new year and the Officers and Men, Godā€™s protection as they go about undertaking the hazardous task of ensuring a safe and secure environment in the country,ā€ the statement concluded.
