LAGOS PARKING POLICY: LASPA DEMANDS FOR RESIDENTS’ COOPERATION
The General Manager, Lagos State Parking Authority (LASPA), Mrs. Adebisi Adelabu, has urged Lagosians to support the execution of the Lagos State Parking Policy in a bid to counteract the detrimental effects of parking-related problems on the state’s economy and population well-being
According to Adelabu, the effects of careless parking on the environment and the state’s economy have become intolerable. She also stated that the government can no longer turn a blind eye and permit chaos to persist in the parking sector.
She claims that the State Government has embraced a comprehensive strategy to control parking in all its forms throughout the State.
“LASPA is exploring and optimizing all standard parking options to maximize urban public spaces such as the adoption of On and Off street parking and the use of Setbacks, as part of identified strategies that will help provide lasting solutions to parking challenges and parking-induced traffic in the State”, she stated.
According to the General Manager, the Agency has found over 20,000 setbacks across the State that are ideal for parking, of which over 13,000 are now in use. Work is currently being done to find further setbacks.
She disclosed that the on-street parking policy has generated over 1800 parking spaces, and 1162 signages have been put up to make parking convenient for Lagos residents.
In order to prevent enforcement, Adelabu urged all corporate entities, car park operators, and other industry participants to follow the parking policy and pay their fees on time.
According to her, Governor Sanwo-Olu had emphasized in his address during the State’s 24th Annual Thanksgiving Service on Sunday that Lagosians should anticipate greater action from the government this year and they too should be prepared to do their share by abiding by the law.
The General Manager issued a warning against certain unpatriotic entities that constantly seek to break the law by neglecting their civic responsibilities, rejecting demand notices and attacking LASPA officers.
She said, “It is against the law to reject demand notices or refuse to pay rates as and when due, and LASPA will no longer tolerate such acts, there will be sanctions and the defaulters from the previous year should be prepared to pay up this year”.
Adelabu stated that last year over 2,710 demand notices were issued to Business owners and corporate entities who use setbacks for Car Parking across the State, adding that 2,200 of the demand notices were duly acknowledged and responded to accordingly.
However, some unpatriotic entities rejected the notices and even went as far as assaulting government officials while on their lawful duties. “We will no longer condone such unlawful acts, they will be made to face the full weight of the law” Adelabu stressed.
In order to give concerned business entities and car park operators time to plan appropriately and make payments in advance, the General Manager stated that Demand Notices for the year 2024 are already being sent out throughout the State.
She proceeded by saying, in order to guarantee that the Lagos state parking policy is fully implemented, there will be strict enforcement this year. If the policy is successful, the majority of parking issues that are negatively affecting the state’s economy will be resolved, and everyone’s commute will be made more enjoyable.
Adelabu urged everyone, whether locals and tourists, to follow traffic laws and refrain from parked carelessly so that everyone may travel throughout the state easily and enjoy themselves.
The General Manager restated LASPA’s commitment to resolving any parking-related concerns and guaranteeing the greatest parking experience for Lagos State’s citizens and tourists. For quick resolution, she advised anyone experiencing parking-related problems to call LASPA at 012275230 or 012275231, or to visit the Agency’s website at www.laspa.lg.gov.ng.
