IBADAN EXPLOSION: OVER 20 HOUSES AFFECTED – NEMA
The National Emergency Management Agency has revealed that over 20 houses were affected in the Tuesday night explosion that rocked the Bodija area of Ibadan, Oyo State capital.
NEMA stated in a statement on Wednesday that they did not yet have any information regarding the number of casualties.
It also disclosed that the explosion was most likely triggered by an improvised explosive device.
Residents of Ibadan were terrified on Tuesday night when an explosion happened along Dejo Oyelese Street in the Bodija neighborhood of the city.
“Over 20 houses were affected. Casualty figures can not be ascertained for now. Search and rescue operation is still ongoing,” the agency said.
Nonetheless, NEMA gave state residents reassurance, stating that “the situation has been brought under control while arrangements are going on to ensure smooth operation,” adding that security has been increased in the area while plans are underway for additional support to help with the activities.
Seyi Makinde, the state governor, reacted to the terrible event by saying that preliminary security agency investigations had shown that explosive devices hidden by unauthorized miners were the reason behind the explosion that struck the area.
Makinde stated that even though there were still open investigations, those found responsible will face consequences during his visit to the explosion site on Tuesday evening.
In addition, he said that the government will pay the victims’ medical expenses, but he pledged to make sure that everyone whose home was impacted was “supported to rebuild their lives.”
The explosion was confirmed by the Oyo State Police Command on Tuesday night.
It added that there has been a sufficient deployment of their personnel to prevent any collapse in law and order, but the exact number of casualties in the incident is still unknown.
However, the state government has appealed to residents of the state to vacate the incident scene.
According to the government on its X handle Wednesday morning, “this will enable emergency and rescue efforts to continue at the site without interference. Search and rescue efforts using earth-moving equipment continued throughout the night and remain ongoing. We will keep providing updates about the situation.”
