(VIDEO) LAGOS OKADA BAN: SIZEABLE NUMBER OF MOTORCYCLES CONFISCATED IN A DAY AS MILITARY JOIN THE ENFORCEMENT
The Lagos State Government, in an effort to enforce traffic laws, had earlier initiated a strong campaign directed against motorcycles that were operating on restricted routes in the metropolis. The campaign is a component of the continuous efforts to improve traffic congestion and public safety.
In a related development, the military, in an attempt to promote unity and cooperation, has sent its officers to be part of the enforcement, which saw a sizable number of motorcycles seized in just a day.
In addition, the military officials were not only part of the enforcement just to offer support but also to apprehend military violators without using force.
Recall that the Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi, speaking from his Alausa office in Ikeja, commended the recent strategic enforcement efforts led by the State Commissioner of Police and the Lagos State Task Force.
He went on to say that the campaign’s goals are to completely stop motorcycle operations in designated restricted zones, maintain public safety, and improve the city’s transportation system, adding that the city’s 15 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) and 10 Local Government Areas (LGAs) still forbid the use of commercial motorcycles (Okada).
Osiyemi urged residents and commuters to refrain from using motorcycles on restricted routes. He reiterated the penalties for violation, which include three years in prison for both riders and passengers with their motorcycles impounded and publicly crushed in accordance with Section 46, sub-sections 1, 2, and 3 of the Transport Sector Reform Law (TSRL), 2018.
Meanwhile, the continuation of enforcement is guaranteed by CP Adegoke Fayoade, the Commissioner of Police for Lagos State, through the PPRO, Lagos State Command.
