EMPOWERMENT: LASG TRAINS OVER 250 RESIDENTS
The Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation (WAPA) has launched 250 residents into the entrepreneurial sector through its four weeks short-term Skills Acquisition programme as a strategic initiative to alleviate poverty and improve the standard of living amongst women, girls and youths
Speaking at the graduation ceremony for participants, the Commissioner for WAPA, Mrs. Cecilia Dada stated that the programme, which was held at Ojo Square Somolu Local Government and a collaborative effort with the Lagos State Health Management Authority, was meant to incorporate people living with disability and had registered in the Ilera Eko Scheme with livelihood support to become financially independent
She said, “The programme aims to uplift the lives of indigents, vulnerable and internally displaced persons, as well as people with disabilities, across various communities of Lagos State with ready-to-go skills in meeting their various economic demands and challenges”.
Dada explained that the first phase of the year 2024 training ran simultaneously across five Centres, namely Ojo Square, Somolu; LASEMA IDP Camp, Igando; Bonny Camp, Victoria Island; Foursquare Church Omole Phase I, Iru-Victoria Island and Muri – Okunola, Eti-osa Local Government Area.
While applauding participants for exhibiting good conduct as well as remarkable resilience, determination, and commitment towards achieving self-sufficiency, the MWAPA Commissioner enjoined them on establishing sustainable businesses through discipline and accountability.
She said, “The State Government is ready to address factors militating against women and youths from attaining their full potentials, like illiteracy, joblessness, teenage pregnancies and cultural issues, among others and give the necessary support to residents irrespective of their positions in the State through various skills, including Events Decoration, Flower Arrangement, Fabric Stoning, Tie and Dye, Catering, Soap, Pomade and Insecticide Production, Hair Braiding and Wig Making, Throw Pillows and Duvet Making, among others”.
In her goodwill message, the Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Health Management Authority (LASHMA), Dr. Emmanuella Zamba, who was represented by Mr. Olatunji Rotimi, the Head, Business Unit of the Agency, commended Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu for his unflinching support at ensuring that no one is left behind in this T. H. E M. E S Plus Agenda.
He urged beneficiaries to cultivate the habit of discipline and dedication to work so that they can succeed.
Mr. Kayode Oludare, the Vice Chairman, Ifako Community Development Association, commended the Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation for enhancing the development of human capacities for self -sustainability
The highlight of the occasion was the presentation of Certificates of Competency and Start-Up kits to all the participants to enhance their trade proficiencies.
