Waikumo Amakoromo, a candidate for the All Progressives Grand Alliance, has been proclaimed the winner of the Saturday run-off election for Yenagoa Constituency 2 by the Independent National Electoral Commission.

Amakoromo defeated his main rival, Mrs. Ebiuwou Koku-Obiyai of the Peoples Democratic Party, with 5,959 votes overall, to 5,263 votes.

At the INEC collation center, Okolobiri, the headquarters of Yenagoa constituency 2, on Saturday night, Prof. Chris Onyema, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Federal University, Otuoke and the INEC Returning Officer, announced the results.

According to Onyema, the APGA candidate received the most votes and was therefore proclaimed the winner of the Yenagoa constituency 2 rerun election.

Before the collation exercise commenced, he had explained that “whatever results collated today will be merged with the previous results and the total scores declared.”

The APGA candidate received 4, 971 votes, while the PDP candidate received 4,593 votes, in the March 2023 State House of Assembly election.

In the wake of Amakoromo’s victory, Koku-Obiyai, who was running for a third term, was unsuccessful in her attempt to hold onto the Yenagoa constituency 2 seat.

Dissatisfied, she instituted a legal action to challenge the outcome of the poll and the Court of Appeal ordered a rerun in the affected seven polling units.

The conclusion of Saturday’s re-run election in the affected seven polling units has effectively resolved the contention for the Yenagoa constituency 2 seat in the 24-member legislature.
