NINE DIE, SEVEN INJURED IN LAGOS-ABEOKUTA ROAD CRASH

Nine people died while seven others were injured on Tuesday in an early morning crash that occurred on Lagos-Abeokuta expressway at the Kere bridge in the Ewekoro LGA, Ogun State.

The crash involved a truck and a Mazda bus with number plate SMK 808 YD.

The accident, blamed on excessive speed and route violation reportedly caused an head-on collision between the truck and the Mazda bus.

The Spokesperson for the Ogun State Sector Command of Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, Florence Okpe disclosed this in a statement made available to journalists on Tuesday.

Okpe said that while the injured have been taken to General Hospital, Ijaye, the bodies of the deceased have been deposited at Lantoro Hospital, Abeokuta.

The statement partly reads, “the fatal crash occurred at about 0800 hrs on Lagos-Abeokuta route. A total of 17 persons were involved which comprised of 7 male adults, 9 female adults and 01 female

“A total of 07 Persons were injured, 05 female adults, 01 male adult and 01 female child but unfortunately 09 persons were recorded dead from the crash ( 05 male adults and 04 female adults)”

“2 vehicles were involved; Truck with no registration number black colour, a white colour Mazda bus with registration number SMK808YD

“The suspected causes of the fatal crash were over-speeding and one-way (Route violation) that led to head on collision of the two vehicles. The injured victims were taken to General Hospital Ijaye while the dead bodies were deposited at Lantoro Hospital/ General Hospital Ijaye Abeokuta”.

Meanwhile, Ogun Sector Commander of FRSC, Anthony Uga has however cautioned motorists on route violation and excessive speed, pointing out the dangers associated with the two critical offences.

Uga also advised motorists to adhere to traffic rules and regulations.

The Sector Commander has sympathised with the family of the crash victims praying God to grant them the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.

Last month, the Ogun Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps said anarticulated vehicle crushed a man to death  while three others were injured in an accident at Toll-Gate on the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway.

The South-West Area Commander of TRACEC, Mr Adekunle Ajibade, told journalists in Ota, Ogun state that the incident occurred at about 5:06 am.
