SENATE TO PROBE FAILED AGREEMENTS TO PRODUCE PREPAID METERS LOCALLY
In an attempt to improve electricity usage, the Senate has decided to look into a failed deal that would have seen regional producers create prepaid metres that would have been disseminated across the country.
A two-trillion-naira subsidy is also under investigation, according to Minister of Power Adebayo Adelabu. This is necessary to prevent a recurrence of the gasoline subsidy scenario that continues to plague the country’s economy.
These resolutions were approved today as part of Senator Aminu Lya Abbas’s motion of public concern. The committee on power has been directed to conduct an equal investigation into the 1.3 trillion naira owed by the ministry to generating firms and the 1.3 billion dollars owed to gas companies, subsequent to the resolutions.
The lawmakers agreed that the Federal Government stands down the idea of increase in electricity tariff by withdrawing subsidy, engage the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission to come up with lasting solution to the energy billing system in the country.
The legislators resolved to also investigate the operations of DISCOs to ascertain the current status of metering and their extent of compliance with relevant legal and regulatory frameworks in service delivery as well as the release of funds by the Federal Government for mass pre-paid metering and report findings to the senate among others.
