In an attempt to protest the ongoing arrest of former governor Abdulfattah Ahmed, members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Kwara State Chapter stormed the office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in Ilorin, the state capital, on Wednesday.

Protesters holding placards sang songs in Yoruba to voice their disapproval and show support for the former governor who is in detention.

A few of the banners read, among other things, “EFCC, stop the persecution” and “Gov. Ahmed was transparent.”Despite heavy security at the anti-graft agency’s zonal headquarters, a protest was held.

According to reports, Ahmed was questioned by EFCC investigators on Monday regarding transactions totaling billions of naira made while he was the state’s governor. As of the time of publication, the former governor of Kwara, who arrived at the anti-graft agency’s Ilorin office on Monday morning, had not been freed.

Ahmed is actively responding to inquiries on the expenditure of these funds under his supervision. From May 2011 to May 2019, Ahmed served as the governor of the North Central State, transferring the reins to Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq.

Wahab Oba, Ahmed’s chief press secretary, stated in a statement on Monday that his principal’s visit to the anti-graft agency’s office was more than just a standard and formal one.
