FIFA APPROVES NATIONALITY SWITCH FOR ARSENAL GOALKEEPER FROM ENGLAND TO NIGERIA
Federation Internationale de Football Association(FIFA), has reportedly approved the nationality switch of Arsenal goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo from England.
Multiple sources within the Nigerian media have confirmed that the 22-year-old Arsenal-owned goalkeeper, currently on loan at Wrexham, is now eligible to play for both the Super Eagles of Nigeria and the Olympic Eagles.
Nigeria faced goalkeeper issues prior to the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations due to the subpar performance of Francis Uzoho, prompting the search for additional goalkeeping talent.
Chippa United goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali was introduced and he stepped up for the Super Eagles during the tournament, earning accolades and recognition in the country as well as in his community.
Okonkwo’s decision to switch national allegiance presents a significant challenge to Nwabali and other goalkeepers in the squad, while also strengthening Nigeria’s goalkeeping depth.
In addition to Nwabali and Uzoho, Nigeria’s goalkeeper pool includes Adebayo Adeleye, Ojo Olorunleke, and now, with Okonkwo’s potential inclusion, further options.
Born in London, Okonkwo has previously represented England at various youth levels, including the U-16, U-17, and U-18 teams. His decision to join the Super Eagles follows in the footsteps of players like Calvin Bassey, Alex Iwobi, and Ademola Lookman, marking a significant move in his international career.
