….
The Lagos State Office of Sustainable Development Goals (OSDG) in partnership with African Human Capital Development Plus, on Tuesday, started a two-day advocacy workshop on human capital development for stakeholders in the state.
The Head of Service, Mr. Bode Agoro, while speaking at the event, explained that as the government works across various sectors to advance good governance, one major emerging priority of the administration in recent years has been the alignment of policies and initiatives to inspire collective effort in solving emerging problems.
Agoro also revealed that the state’s efforts to connect diverse stakeholders, including development advocates and policymakers, will advance the agenda of human capital development, as he further stated that the 2-day workshop is extremely critical towards strengthening the state’s HCD policies and fostering greater engagement with citizens.
He said, “Lagos is one of the most suitable places in Africa where human capital development can be explored in its entirety. As a home to one of the most dynamic and multicultural populace in the world with a value-based commercial and enterprising economy, the city represents an ideal setting for policymakers to examine the challenges and opportunities associated with human capital development on the continent”.
Agoro affirmed that the administration’s investment in the education sector remains paramount as all indices have shown some positive attributes that are catalysing growth and development in the sector, while highlighting the government’s interventions in the three thematic areas of Education, Health and Nutrition, and Labour Force Participation in relation to this administration’s THEMES Plus Agenda.
“The scale of Government investments in the health sector is designed to create new frontiers for health emergencies and promote greater inclusion by broadening access to healthcare, especially among under-served populations”.
He however, mentioned that in order to advance the labour force agenda, the government has persisted in fostering an innovative society through a public-private partnership, fostering an environment that enables our large workforce to succeed in all human undertakings.
Meanwhile, Mrs. Finda Koroma, the Chief Executive Officer of Africa HCD Plus, who was represented by the Chief Operating Officer, Africa HCD+, Mr. Sheka Bangura, while giving her remarks, stated that the organisation is collaborating with various stakeholders to expedite political pledges, funding decisions, and decision-making for critical priorities in the pursuit of the Sustainable Development Goals in Sub-Saharan Africa.
She also stated that, active involvement and ownership at every level of governance is necessary to change systemic problems, modify investment patterns, carry out extensive reforms, and change behaviour to advance the HCD goal, as she explained that the workshop’s goals is to create strong advocacy implementation and evaluation plans as well as workable techniques for effective collaboration in order to improve Lagos State’s and the country’s human capital resources.
Mrs Koroma, praised Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for spearheading national initiatives and utilising the potential of many industries for cooperative synergy, but also pointed out that stakeholders needed to come together with a common goal and fortify the path towards achieving it.
“In line with the HCD+ thematic areas and within the broader context of the THEMES+ Agenda, Lagos State is already allocating a significant portion of its budget to education, health welfare and employment. It is admirable that the State is not driving these reforms in isolation but has formed effective partnerships with private sector actors”,
The Permanent Secretary of the Office of Sustainable Development Goals, Mrs. Tolani Oshodi, however thanked the Lagos State Govt, HOS, and participants as she emphasized the significance of utilising the unrealized potential of the most valuable resource, people for the advancement of the HCD Agenda.
She therefore, urged participants to look into ways of creating pertinent enlightenment and advocacy methods that will aid in the government’s articulation of goals and policies that will benefit the general public.
