In order to align operators of homeowners and orphanages in the state with the laid-down rules guiding the Lagos State Policy on Food and Nutrition, the State Ministry of Youth and Social Development has organised a one-day capacity-building programme.

In his keynote address at the event held on Tuesday at the Correctional Centre for Junior Boys in Yaba, the Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, Mr. Mobolaji Ogunlende, said the programme was designed to ensure the compliance of owners of private homes and orphanages with the Lagos State Food and Nutrition Policy and Plan of Action.

Ogunlende also stated that the administration of Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu was not only concerned about food security but also ensuring that the necessary nutritional requirements were met, particularly for wards in both government and private homes.

According to him, the THEMES Plus agenda was to make sure that no person was left behind in any area, adding that participants must put the knowledge acquired into practice.

The Permanent Secretary, Pharm (Mrs.) Toyin Oke-Osanyintolu, stressed the need for the participants to learn, unlearn and relearn in line with the evolving realities in their sector, where nutrition must be made a priority.

Pharm. Oke-Osanyintolu disclosed that the Ministry would continue to place a premium on capacity building for owners of private homes and orphanages for the children under their watch to receive the best care.

Further stressing the relevance of the programme, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Economic Planning and Budget, Mr. Amodu Obajomo, represented by Mr. Banjo Ogunsola, a Director in the Ministry, stated that the implementation of the Lagos State Policy on Food and Nutrition was necessary because the nutritional well-being of all people is a pre-condition for development and a key objective of progress in human development.

In their presentations, the State Nutrition Officer, Mrs. Olanrewaju Olubunmi and the Health Educator, L.S.M.O.H., Mrs. Moronfolu Olanike, enlightened the participants on how to prepare an adequate diet for all ages, the role of nutrition in the total well-being of children and how to use different food supplements to prevent malnutrition in children.
