Ebute Metta General Hospital recently joined other health institutions in the global fight against glaucoma, with a series of initiatives to commemorate the just concluded World Glaucoma Week 2024.

The hospital embarked on a multifaceted approach to raise awareness, promote early detection, and provide comprehensive care for those affected by the sight-threatening disease during the week-long event which started on Sunday, March 10th through Saturday, 16th March, 2024 under the theme “Uniting for a Glaucoma-Free World”.

Speaking during a one-day Eye Tests session, organised by the Hospital’s Eye Clinic for both staff and patients, on Tuesday, March 12th, 2024, the hospital’s Eye Team, led by ADNS Olukemi Olulana said the proactive measure was aimed at detecting potential cases of glaucoma and other eye-related issues early.

Also, the Team embarked on an outreach sensitisation initiative across Ebute Metta and its environs on Thursday, March 14, 2024, where they enlightened the residents about the significance of routine eye examinations and the potential consequences of glaucoma, often referred to as the ‘thief of sight.’

During the sensitisation, ADNS Olulana, underscored the critical importance of early detection in preventing irreversible vision loss, emphasising the need for regular eye screenings, especially among high-risk populations.

The dedicated teams of medical professionals conducted thorough examinations, identifying individuals at risk of glaucoma and providing essential counselling on lifestyle modifications and treatment options, including the provision of free eye screenings for over 60 residents of Ebute Metta and the environment.
