….. calls on all young fashion entrepreneurs to join the challenge
The founders of the Afrika Fashion League (AFL), Benard Otunola and Adebayo Ilupeju, has called on young entrepreneurs with extra-ordinary skills and talent in fashion designing, to send in their entries for the third edition of the ’90 Minutes Challenge’ coming up in April 2024.
The challenge which started in 2018, was organized in order to alleviate poverty and also as an avenue to provide young fashion entrepreneurs with the opportunity to be recognized while also showcasing their fashion prowess.
While speaking during a press conference held in Lagos on Wednesday, Ilupeju said that AFL is interested in fashion across Africa while stating that it was very possible for a fashion designer to create an outfit in 90 minutes, which is actually the concept behind the challenge.
“We are interested in fashion across Africa. Afrika Fashion League aims to showcase African fashion to the world, and inspire fashion businesses on the continent to grow.
“If you take a look at most individual fashion collections, you will notice that people are willing to spend more money on foreign brands, rather than in our country. So, AFL aims to encourage fashion designers to create value and make our products more appealing.”
He mentioned that a total number of 24 designers will be shortlisted using the number of likes on their works posted on social media, for the final challenge where they will be given a task to showcase their skills within 90 minutes time frame, while noting that; as part of the criteria, the applicants must have some level of experience in tailoring and fashion design, must have a social media account, and will need to send in pictures of their works samples, as they tag the #AFL90MinutesChallenge for assessment by the judges.
Ilupeju however, stated that after the challenge, the winner would be going home with a high grade Industrial Machine and other accessories. The runners-up will get tailoring accessories while other finalists will get consolatory prizes respectively.
This year’s edition will have judges who are accomplished practitioners in the fashion industry such as Kola Qudus, Adebayo Jones, Vivian Odofin, Fashion Brand Managers, past winners amongst others, he said.
