“No evidence of blunt force trauma in this body. The findings in the oesophagus and stomach are not compatible with chemical intoxication. Death, in this case, is natural.
The Coroner, Mikhail Kadiri who is presiding over the proceedings, made the revelation while giving judgement at the Samuel Ilori court, on Monday.
While giving the verdict, the coroner stated that Oromoni Jnr’s death was an avoidable one, but for parental and medical negligence.
Prior to his passing on November 30, 2021, he was reported to have claimed that he had been beaten up by five senior Dowen College students: Favour Benjamin, 16, Edward Begue, 16, Ansel Temile, 14, Kenneth Inyang, and Michael Kashamu, 16, the late senator Buruji Kashamu’s son.
However, on January 5, 2022, the Lagos State Government cleared the five Dowen College personnel and students who had been charged with Sylvester Oromoni’s death in Lekki, Lagos.
Kadiri said, “Based on the foregoing, it is clear that the deceased’s health deteriorated in (doctor) PW 3’s care.
“PW 3, did not take proper care of the deceased, PW 3, completely abandoned the deceased for a period of more than 32 hours.
“The deceased’s death was an avoidable one but for the negligence of the parents and PW 3, they didn’t take him to the hospital until the day he died on November 30, 2021.
“The deceased went through an avoidable and excruciating pain and made to suffer needlessly,” Kadiri said.

On March 14, 2022, Dr. Clement Vhriterhire, a pathologist with Central Hospital Warri, Delta state, who performed the original autopsy on Sylvester Oromoni Jnr’s body, confirmed that the student died of pneumonia leading to sepsis, while agreeing that a huge dose of Antibiotics, blood transfusion, and other recommendations would have saved his life.
Magistrate Kadiri cleared a few Dowen College students who had been implicated in the event, finding that they had no involvement in Sylvester’s death and had no right to be involved in the first place.
In order to prevent such tragedies of this kind, the coroner also offered some advice. He cautioned parents against taking their kids’ health lightly.
In addition, he called for future cooperation between the police and the medical staff and for the police to exercise prudence before making an arrest.
He also suggested that Dowen College’s administration make sure that all student admissions and departures from the residence hall are properly documented and that the five students who are thought to have bullied the deceased.
Speaking with the Press after the judgement, Mr. Sylvester Oromoni Snr. thanked the court for the verdict while lamenting that the verdict does not represent the true position of the evidence taken.
“Medical experts did not give us the concluding results because they said they saw some substances inside the body of the boy but they never tested it. This is not the end of the case as far as I’m concerned,” he said.
