JUST IN: SERAP ISSUES FG 48-HOUR ULTIMATUM TO REVERSE CYBERSECURITY LEVY
The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has given a 48-hour deadline to the Federal Government to withdraw the 0.5 percent cybersecurity levy imposed on Nigerian people.
SERAP made this known, Tuesday, in a statement on its official X handle, to react to the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) directives to commercial banks and other financial institutions to start charging cybersecurity levy.
As previously reported by HOTJIST, the CBN ordered banks to impose a cybersecurity tax on Nigerian customers making online transactions starting in two weeks from Monday.
However, 16 identified banking transactions were spared from the new cybersecurity levy by the apex bank.
While making clarifications, the CBN said the levy would be separately āreflected in the customerās accountā as āCybersecurity Levyā and āapplied at the point of electronic transfer origination, then deducted and remitted by the financial institution.āā
Reacting to the new development, SERAP threatened to sue the FG if the āgrossly unlawfulā directive by the CBN is not reversed.
The statement read, āThe Tinubu administration must immediately withdraw the grossly unlawful CBN directive to implement section 44 of the Cybercrime Act 2024, which imposes a 0.5% ācybersecurity levyā on Nigerians. Weāll see in court if the directive is not withdrawn within 48 hours.āā
