In a grandiose ceremony held at the Kremlin on Tuesday, Russian President Vladimir Putin took the oath of office for a record-breaking fifth term, giving him unprecedented power.

Since the year 2000, the 71-year-old has ruled Russia. In March, he won presidential elections with no opposition and was re-elected for a six-year term.

As he assumed office for a record-breaking fifth term as president, Putin declared during his inaugural speech that Russia would emerge stronger and victorious from the current “difficult” moment.

ā€œWe will pass through this difficult, decisive period with dignity and become even stronger,ā€ Putin said at his inauguration ceremony at the Kremlin, attended by an AFP journalist.

ā€œWe are a united and great nation,ā€ Putin said in an upbeat speech, to applause from an audience of around 2,500 people including officials and military top brass.

ā€œTogether we will overcome all obstacles, achieve everything we have planned, and together we will win,ā€ he said.

He said after being sworn into office that he viewed the presidency as a ā€œhuge honour, responsibility and sacred dutyā€.

The Russian leader vowed to ensure ā€œsustained and stable development, unity and independence of the countryā€.

Putin thanked soldiers taking part in what Russia calls a ā€œspecial military operationā€ in Ukraine, more than two years after it began on February 24, 2022, at a ceremony attended by some of those fighting.

ā€œWe are looking forward confidently,ā€ Putin stressed in his speech, which was aired on national television.

Evoking the countryā€™s ā€œthousand-year historyā€ as he spoke in the Kremlinā€™s gilded St Andrewā€™s Hall, the president said that present-day Russians owed a debt to previous generations who achieved ā€œsuch triumphs that inspire us todayā€.

He said Russians shared a ā€œfirm conviction that we ourselves alone will determine the fate of Russia for the sake of present and future generationsā€.

Russia is ā€œnot refusing dialogue with western statesā€ and is ready to talk about ā€œquestions of security and strategic stabilityā€, Putin said, ā€œbut only on equal terms, respecting the interests of each otherā€.
