LASEPA HOLDS 9TH NOISELESS LAGOS SUMMIT

Noise pollution is not only frustrating but it is also known to have multiple adverse effects on your health.

On this note, the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency during the 9th edition of the Noiseless Lagos Summit held at JJT park, Alausa, with the theme: Hearing Deficit, focused on the effects of noise pollution on human health.

Dr. Babatunde Ajayi, the General Manager of LASEPA, while giving his address, said Lagosians need to be aware and sensitized on the damage this menace can cause to their health and wellbeing.

He added that the agency will not relent on the sensitization while encouraging self-regulatory and voluntary compliance of residents.

Ajayi called on all everyone to be actively involved in ensuring the attainment of a serene and safe environment that is commensurate with its vision of a smart city.

General Manager, Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Mr. Olalekan Bakare Oki, ably represented by Mr. Gbangbasa Olatunji, mentioned that the Agency is working with other stakeholders to ensure that public transportation reduces noise pollution while making sure that there is free flow of traffic in Lagos State.

He noted that the agency is also doing all it can to ensure that all motoring public put their vehicle in order before it is brought to the roads.

Olatunji said, “We have carried out a lot of inspection and advocacy so that misuse of horns will be reduced on our roads. We implore the motoring public to ensure that their vehicles are in good condition in order to reduce pollution and congestion on Lagos roads.”

He however, thanked LASEPA for the awareness campaign while expressing willingness to spread the message to proffer a lasting solution to noise pollution in the state.

Badejo Olusegun Isaiah, the States Health Educator and Director Health Promotion, Lagos Sate Ministry of Health, noted that there’s a lot of hearing defects in the city hence the initiative by LASEPA.

“We have considered that there’s a lot of hearing defects in the city and research have shown that it is one of the effects of noise pollution.”

He also gave details on the three types of Noise pollution in Lagos, while further explaining how they could harm the health and wellbeing of its citizens.

Badejo said, “Noise Pollution from Transportation, Neighborhood and Industrialization.”

“The implications of this noise ranges from hypertension which makes the heart race increase to congestive cardiac failure, permanent hearing loss amongst others.”

He noted that as experts, one of the solutions to vehicular noise pollution is for the government to set up a regulatory policy that will specify the type of horns to be used by vehicles in Lagos adding that every sound level must be regulated within the confine of its environment.

He urged everyone to ensure the the level of noise in the environment is brought to the barest minimum to ensure a healthy lifestyle.

At the end of the program, free hearing tests was provided for participants while some were referred for further investigation to prevent loss of hearing.
