G-WAGON DEBT: PORTABLE FAILS BAIL CONDITIONS, STILL IN POLICE CUSTODY
Habeeb Okikiola, better known by his stage name Portable, is a Nigerian musician who spent the night in a police cell after failing to post bail after being detained for not paying the N14 million debt he incurred when he bought a G-Wagon from a Lagos State car dealer.
The development was confirmed by a source who spoke with our correspondent on Wednesday.
According to the source, Portable was placed under bond when he was detained on Tuesday, but he didn’t follow through on those conditions.
āHe is still in police custody as we speak. When he paid N13m for the G-Wagon that cost N27m and refused to pay the balance, the car dealer asked him to return the vehicle when his excuse was that it was bad but he also refused,ā the source said.
Confirming that Portable passed the night in a police cell after he was arrested, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, when contacted on Wednesday, said the musician was still in the custody of the police.
Hundeyin said, āHe has presented no reliable surety yet so he (Portable) is still with us.ā
Meanwhile, in two viral videos showing the moments policemen attempted to arrest Portable, our correspondent observed in one of the videos that Portable attempted to evade arrest when he fled the scene.
He was pursued by the police, who eventually caught up to him and pinned him.
Our correspondent saw that Portable was resisting arrest by four police officers who hauled and dumped him inside a van, even though they had managed to pin him down.
The videos had been eliciting a range of responses.
While some chastised Portable for defying arrest, others accused him of defaming his social standing by withholding the N14 million remaining from the car’s purchase.
Hotjist had earlier reported that Portable, during the purchase of the vehicle worth N27m, paid only N13m and had refused to pay the N14m balance.
Despite several failed attempts to get him to pay the balance, the car dealer, who claimed that Portableās excuse for not paying was that the vehicle was bad, reportedĀ toĀ theĀ police.
