SERAP URGES PRESIDENT TINUBU TO PUBLISH ASSET DECLARATION
The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has called on President Bola Tinubu to commemorate his first year in office by publicly releasing his asset declaration form, urging other top officials to follow suit to promote transparency and accountability in government.
In an open letter dated May 25, 2024, and signed by SERAP deputy director Kolawole Oluwadare, the organization also urged Vice-President Kashim Shettima, ministers, and state governors to follow suit.
SERAP emphasized that publishing these forms would serve “legitimate public interests” by promoting transparency, accountability, and public trust in government. The group also recommended that President Tinubu propose a constitutional amendment to create a publicly accessible database of asset declarations for all government officials.
Highlighting Tinubu’s inaugural promise to combat corruption and uphold the rule of law, SERAP argued, “Transparency in the details of asset declaration forms would also enable Nigerians to scrutinise the forms and verify the financial situation of public officials and alert about possible conflicts of interest and corruption.”
They noted that such transparency aligns with Nigeria’s constitutional and international obligations, stating, “Information regarding the property and economic interests of public officials ought to be accessible to the public through a website created for this purpose.”
SERAP concluded that publicizing asset declarations would enhance public confidence in government integrity and reinforce Nigeria’s democratic values.
They stated, “Those who voluntarily seek or occupy public offices and are catered for by the public have certain fiduciary duties to be open, transparent and accountable to the people regarding the details of their asset declaration forms.”
