COURT ORDERS FORFEITURE OF N11.14 BILLION CHOICE PROPERTIES LINKED TO EMEFIELE
On Wednesday, the Federal High Court in Lagos issued an order for the temporary confiscation of properties worth N11,140,000,000.00 that were connected to the troubled former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele.
Following a motion ex parte filed and argued by Rotimi Oyedepo, Senior Advocate of Nigeria and counsel to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), who represented Bilkisu Buhari-Bala and Chineye Okezie in the proceedings, Justice Chukwujekwu Aneke issued the ruling.
The properties were ordered to be temporarily forfeited to the federal government by the court.
Oyedepo told the judge that Emefiele was thought to have purchased the desirable homes through a proxy using money obtained through fraud. The majority of the properties are found in upscale areas of Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory.
Three CBN employees, Obayemi Oluwaseun Teben, Akomolafe Adebayo, and Olubunmi Makinde, were also implicated by the EFCC as Emefiele’s accomplices. These employees exploited their positions and clout to get the retail and special distribution of foreign currency to various businesses in exchange for bribes.
In order for any interested party to provide justification for why the ultimate order of forfeiture should not be made, Justice Aneke has directed the EFCC to publish the decision in the media.
The judge postponed the hearing on the motion for final forfeiture until June 21.
