JUST IN: COMMITTEE RECOMMENDS PROBE OF EL-RUFAI FOR ABUSE OF OFFICE, MONEY LAUNDERING
The Kaduna State House of Assembly established an ad hoc committee to look into all finances, loans, and contracts given out under former governor Nasir El-Rufai.
The committee’s chairman, Henry Zacharia, presented the report to the House during plenary on Wednesday, stating that most of the loans taken out during El-Rufai’s administration were not used for the intended purpose and that in some cases, the proper procedures were not followed in order to obtain the loans.
Therefore, the committee recommended that security and anti-corruption agencies look into and prosecute El-Rufai and a few other indicted members of his cabinet for abusing their positions of authority by awarding contracts without following the proper procedures, diverting public funds, money laundering, and heavily indebting Kaduna State.
The committee also suggested that the state universal basic education board chairman and Kaduna State Commissioner of Finance, Shizer Badda, who held the same position under El-Rufai, be suspended immediately.
It also advised relevant law enforcement and anti-corruption organisations to conduct a thorough probe into a few of the previous administration’s top officials.
The committee set up by the Kaduna State House of Assembly was tasked with the assignment of examining loans, grants and projects implementation from 2015 to 2023 during which El-Rufai served as governor of the state.
