22-YEAR-OLD YOBE HOUSEWIFE STABS HUSBAND TO DEATH
After a heated disagreement, a 22-year-old housewife in Damaturu’s Abbari ward fatally stabbed her husband with a knife.
The suspect, Zainab Isa, was named by Yobe State Police Command spokesman Dungus Abdulkarim in a statement he released on Wednesday, confirming the incident.
He added that although the suspect admitted to the crime and acknowledged that her marriage had been tainted by violence from the start, she had given birth to her second child with her late husband, Yahaya Isah, in early June 2024.
Abdulkarim said that the suspect had been captured and taken to the command’s Criminal Investigation Department.
“The command is saddened by the unfortunate actions of a couple that led to the death of a promising young man due to the consequences of an abusive marriage,” he said.
“On 26-06-24, at about 1000hrs, the C Divisional Police Headquarters received a complaint from a neighbour in Abbari Ward, Damaturu, about a couple, Ibrahim Yahaya, 25 years old, and Zainab Isa, 22 years old”.
“The couple had a violent argument on the same date at about 0900hrs, which escalated into a scuffle. The wife used a knife to stab the husband in the chest, and he subsequently died from his grievous injury before the police rescue team arrived.”
The suspect, who was still recovering from a recent medical procedure related to childbirth, admitted during the police’s preliminary inquiry that she did not plan to kill her husband but rather stabbed him in self-defense after he battered and kicked her.
In response to the event, Garba Ahmed, the state commissioner of police, advised couples to register a complaint with their closest family or Sharia court in order to perhaps seek redress or report abuse to the authorities for a long-term solution.
