COURT SENTENCES TWO TO DEATH OVER MURDER, ROBBERY AND RAPE
By Sumayyah Olapade
A Delta State High Court located in Ibusa, Oshimili North Local Government Area, has sentenced two men, Mr. Ola Babatunde and Mr. Ojerbo Solomon, to death after eight years of trial.
The two men were found guilty and sentenced for murder, armed robbery, and rape by the court, which was presided over by Justice M.O. Omovie.
With the help of five witnesses, the prosecution under Mr. E.H. Edema’s direction presented evidence that the two defendants broke into the victims’ home on February 8, 2016, equipped with knives, cutlasses, and firearms.
The offenders sexually assaulted the victims during the robbery, and then slit their throats.
“Mr. Praise Sunday, one of the victims, escaped the attack, but his sister and mother perished.
“After committing the attack, the two defendants escaped on the victim’s motorcycle to Ewohimi in Edo State, from where they were later apprehended by the police,” he said.
In the course of the trial, the two Defendants gave evidence in their defence and denied the allegation in their testimony but called no witnesses.
In his ruling, Justice Omovie said that he had carefully considered the evidence that had been provided throughout the trial and had concluded that the prosecution had proven the case against the two defendants beyond a reasonable doubt. As a result, he had found both defendants guilty of the charges that they had been facing.
“The two Defendants are hereby sentenced to death by hanging,” Justice Omovie declared.
