(UPDATE) ALLEGED TREASON: EASTERN SENATORS BEG TINUBU TO RELEASE NNAMDI KANU

Read Time:1 Minute, 48 Second

South-East senators have begged President Bola Tinubu to order the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the incarcerated indigenous people of Biafra.

The lawmakers, led by Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, asserted that the South-East region’s social and economic activities would stagnate unless Kanu was freed.

The senators handed their letter to President Tinubu regarding Kanu’s release for further consideration by the president during a private meeting with Lateef Fagbemi, the Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation.

Speaking on behalf of his colleagues, Abaribe addressed the media shortly after the meeting and bemoaned the damage the ongoing detention of the Biafra nation agitator has done to the region’s social life and business.

Abaribe expressed severe concern over the fact that thugs and seasoned criminals had taken advantage of the nonviolent demand of the arrested IPOB leader, killing innocent people including security personnel without cause or justice.

The former deputy governor of Abia State informed reporters that he had already visited with Kanu on Monday at the Department of State Services (DSS) headquarters in Abuja and that Kanu had consented to follow any conditions imposed on his release.

Senator Abaribe expressed hope that once Kanu is freed, the hostilities and hostility that have engulfed the area since he was taken into DSS custody in 2021 will no longer exist.

Therefore, the senators begged the AGF to utilize his position and his influence to have President Tinubu hear their message and to drop all charges the federal government had brought against the IPOB leader.

In addition to the senators, Abaribe stated that almost all stakeholders, religious leaders, and political figures concur that Kanu should be freed in order for the region to experience peace again.

The Federal Government re-arrested Kanu in Kenya in 2021 and sent him there to stand trial for acts of terrorism.

Despite his plea of not guilty, Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court in Abuja refused to grant him release, citing his prior bail jump, in which Senator Abaribe was his surety.

Since then, Kanu has been under the DSS’s custody per the Federal High Court of Abuja’s ruling.
