The World Health Organisation has donated some Infection and Prevention and Control materials to the Ondo State Ministry of Health as part of the efforts to help prevent cholera outbreaks.

This was stated in a statement released on Wednesday in the state capital of Akure by the ministry’s press officer, Bisi Lawani.

In a statement, WHO Coordinator Dr. Dele David said that the organisation had always been at the forefront of preventing outbreaks and deaths among healthcare workers as well as in communities, which made it necessary for the state to receive supplies for infection prevention and control in order to ensure the safety of both the communities and the healthcare workers.

The state coordinator said further that the Emergency Operations Centre has always been supported by the WHO for appropriate preparation and well-informed decision-making both during and after the pandemic.

He added that the World Health Organisation has collaborated with local communities in the state to raise awareness of diseases through community and media engagement, and that the organisation has also been helping pillars establish response plans in the event of an outbreak.

He said that via cooperation with the government and other partners in the health sector, WHO will continue to support the nation’s states in ensuring the highest possible sustainable level of health for all citizens.

In a statement, the state’s commissioner of health, Dr. Banji Ajaka, underlined that Ondo State had reported two cases of cholera in March of this year and that the state’s readiness to fight the illness had allowed it to contain the outbreak in the Okitipupa Local Government Area.

“The state is ready to combat any case of cholera as we have activated our surveillance in the 203 wards and the 18 Local Government Areas in the state. Our Disease Surveillance Notification Officers are desperately searching and testing for cases of vomiting and diarrhoea”, the commissioner,” stressed.

He also expressed the commitment of the governor of the state, Lucky Aiyedatiwa to providing an Emergency Preparedness Fund to tackle the scourge of cholera in the state within the shortest period of cholera outbreak in the country.

Ajaka praised the World Health Organisation (WHO) for their assistance to the state, highlighting their actions after the Owo Massacre, when Dr. Walter Mulombo, the WHO Representative, gave the state medication, medical supplies, and equipment to treat the massacre victims.

“The donated materials would help to fight the scourge of cholera and other epidemic-prone diseases such as Lassa fever and it would protect the health workers in the state,” Ajaka commended.
