Global music streaming platform, Spotify, has announced Nigerian music sensations, Ayra Starr and Tems, as the most streamed Nigerian artistes globally.
Phiona Okumu, Spotify’s Head of Music for Sub-Saharan Africa, made this announcement on Wednesday in Lagos.
Okumu stated that Spotify’s 2024 music global impact list included the top 30 artists who had made the largest worldwide gains.
She stated that the top three songs on the list were Tem’s Love Me Jeje, Ayra Starr’s Comma, and Rauw Alexandro and Ayra Starr’s Santa.
Another Vibe by Luciano and Omah Lay came in fourth place; Just Like Me by 21 Savage, Burna Boy, and Metro Booming took fifth place in terms of streams; and No. 1 by Tyla and Tems came in sixth.
In Nigeria, Spotify has released its global Impact List, which lists the top 30 Nigerian songs that have had the greatest overall influence on Spotify during the first half of 2024.
The list honours Nigerian songs that were released between January 1 and June 30 of 2024 and received the most number of plays from outside of the country.
“The seventh-most-streamed Nigerian song worldwide is Ruin by Usher and Pheelz, followed by Reis B and Tempoe’s Pretty Girl in eighth place and TitoM, Yuppe, Burna Boy, and S.N.E’s Tshwala Bam in ninth.
“The tenth most streamed song is Ayra Starr and Giveon’s Last Heartbreak Song, followed by Victony’s Everything in rank eleven, Aya Nakamura and Ayra Starr’s Hype in rank twelve, and Tems and J.Cole’s Free Fall in rank thirteen.
“Nigerian music, particularly Afrobeats, has captured the attention of listeners all over the world with its catchy rhythms, captivating tales, and inventive sound fusions.
“Its ability to transcend cultural and geographical boundaries is truly remarkable. At Spotify, we are thrilled to witness and support the continued evolution of this vibrant scene,” she said.
Okumu observed that female musicians were leading the way with high-charting singles after their most recent album releases, namely Ayra Starr and Tems.
Eight of the top 10 tunes on the list feature partnerships with foreign celebrities, highlighting the frequency of international collaborations, the speaker noted.
According to her, these collaborations range from Pheelz with Usher to Burna Boy with 21 Savage and Metro Boomin, which demonstrates the cross-cultural appeal and growing global impact of Nigerian music.
