NLC PRESIDENT – “EFCC SHOULD CONNECT NIGERIANS TO FIGHT CORRUPTION”

In the continuous fight against corruption in Nigeria, the Nigeria Labour Congress has placed its entire support to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.

This was revealed by Congress President Joe Ajaero in Abuja during the EFCC Walk against Corruption, which took place on Thursday across the nation’s states.

“There is an urgent need for us to fight corruption, and the NLC will throw its weight behind the agency in all fights against corruption,” Ajaero said in his words, highlighting the crucial aspect of the anti-corruption campaign.

In order to maintain the support of true Nigerians for their efforts, he counselled the EFCC to continue being watchful against false information.

The NLC President emphasised the significance of bringing Nigerians together for this cause, proposing that the EFCC establish connections among Nigerians in order to facilitate a widespread movement against corruption.

He said, “Nigerians are united in the fight against corruption clearly I think what your agency needs to do is to connect them so that it will be a mass movement.”

He referenced Nigerian author Chinua Achebe’s book “The Trouble with Nigeria,” which likens the corruption problem to “putting the goat and the yam” together, implying the certainty of corruption without proper safeguards.

Ajaero further stressed the generational nature of the fight against corruption, stating, “We have to make sure that this fight, we are taking it to the next generation. It’s a fight that we can’t afford to lose. If we lose this fight, we have lost the essence of our existence as a nation.”

The essence of who we are as a country is gone if we lose this battle. The labour leader voiced worry about how corruption might affect Nigeria’s progress and standing abroad.

The depressing part about this is that stuff gets taken and discarded from generation to generation. As Nigeria suffers, we are now seen as laughingstocks in some of the countries where we waste our money, Ajaero bemoaned.

In the rallying call to all Nigerians, Ajaero further stated, “My brothers and sisters, I wish to pledge the support of the NLC any time, any day, any moment. We have to come together to fight corruption before corruption will ruin the country.”
