OGUN GOVT EXPRESSES FRUSTRATION OVER RECONSTRUCTION OF LAGOS-ABEOKUTA EXPRESSWAY
The governor of Ogun State, Dapo Abiodun, expressed his displeasure with the renovation of the Lagos-Sango-Abeokuta Expressway, citing bureaucratic bottlenecks as the reason behind the project’s stalling, which has caused ongoing difficulty for drivers.
He promised that the road, which is now under construction, will be finished in September during his remarks on Wednesday during an inspection of the renovation of the 20-kilometer Agbara-Lusada-Atan Dual Carriage Way in the state’s Ado-Odo-Ota Local Government Area.
Abiodun emphasized the significance of roads for both the state’s and the country’s economic health.
The governor recalled the efforts made by the state governments of Ogun and Lagos to retake control of and rebuild the Lagos-Sango-Abeokuta Expressway. He also expressed frustration with the federal government’s delays, citing their frustration dating back to former president Muhammadu Buhari’s administration.
The governor claims that after President Bola Tinubu took office, the Federal Government was contacted once more about transferring the road to the state; this request was ultimately approved.
He said, though, that the state is still up against strong resistance to the transfer from certain federal officials, which compelled the state government to formally award the contract in May regardless of whether the transfer paperwork was in order.
Abiodun said, “The Lagos-Sango- Abeokuta road is a Federal Government road and has been in a very bad shape for long. Because of the suffering our people pass through on the road, I and my counterpart in Lagos jointly wrote a letter, using a single letterhead to the Federal Executive Council, seeking the transfer of that road for us to reconstruct.
“After waiting for a month without reply, we wrote a reminder. That road was not handed over to us until the present federal government came on board. The contract for the road has since been awarded since May this year.”
