POLITICAL NEWS: PDP CLEARS ALL 25 SEATS IN DELTA LG POLL
In the election held on Saturday, July 13, 2024, candidates from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) won all 25 local government chairmanship seats.
One PDP candidate was returned unopposed, according to Jerry Agbaike, the chairman of the Delta State Independent Electoral Commission, who made this announcement on Sunday.
In 24 local government districts around the country, PDP candidates ran against those of other parties and won. In the Udu Local Government Area, however, there was no election because Vincent Oyibode, the PDP’s nominee for chairman, was re-elected without opposition.
Additionally, 499 electoral wards in the state were won by PDP candidates for council seats, while the state’s first electoral ward in the Oshimili North Local Government Area was chosen by the Allied Peoples Movement (APM).
On Monday, July 15, 2024, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori will swear in the 25 elected chairmen.
The Supreme Court ordered the Federal Government to pay the 20.60% monthly allocation of the 774 LGs in the nation directly to their exclusive accounts and not to accounts controlled by governors, making the Delta local government election the second after granting financial autonomy to the third tier of government.
The apex court in the landmark judgment on Thursday also barred power-drunk governors from dissolving democratically elected local government councils.
