NOTORIOUS ARMED ROBBER APPREHENDED IN IBADAN AFTER MOTOCYCLE THEFT IN NSUKKA

Read Time:2 Minute, 6 Second

A suspected armed robber believed to be responsible for a series of crimes in the Nsukka area of Enugu State, including motorcycle snatching, sexual assault, and kidnapping, has been apprehended in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State.

The suspect, named as Emeka Sunday from Enugu-Ezike, said that on April 19, at Lejja, Nsukka, he had taken a motorbike from Mr Stephen Amadi at gunpoint.

Amadi stated that on April 18, the suspect had asked for a ride home, but that midway through the trip, the suspect had pulled a gun on him and taken the motorbike away.

However, a fortuitous turn of events led to the suspect’s downfall.

Through her involvement in the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Ibadan, Amadi’s sister was able to befriend the suspect on Facebook.

The suspect requested the woman to meet him at a hotel in Ibadan, probably thinking he had discovered another possible victim.

The woman quickly got in touch with the authorities at the Eleyele authorities Headquarters in Ibadan after learning this information.

After setting up an ambush at the hotel, the police quickly captured the guy when he came out.

The suspect admitted to stealing a motorbike and committing other crimes during questioning, yet it is still unclear who he is and where he was raised.

Additionally, he acknowledged that he had sold the stolen motorbike for a meagre price of  100,000 naira.

Since the first offence was committed within the jurisdiction of the Enugu State Police Command, the challenge currently lies in the jurisdictional issue.

Though the initial crime happened outside of their jurisdiction, the Oyo State Police Command, which was able to apprehend the defendant, is unable to pursue legal action in this case.

In response to follow-up call for an update on the matter, SP Adewale Osifeso, the state’s Police Public Relations Officer, stated he was unavailable and could not provide any information.

Likewise, when this correspondent tried to contact the Investigating Police Officer (IPO) in charge of the arrest, the provided line was unreachable.

To date, there has been minimal interest from the Ogbede Divisional Police in Enugu State—the original reporting location for the case—in going to Ibadan to arrest the culprit.

It was confirmed that before they can travel, they are purportedly requesting more logistical support from the complainants.

Consequently, the police headquarters at Eleyele, threatened to release the suspect if the Enugu State authorities do not make arrangements to transfer him by at a stipulated time.
