TINUBU NAMES OBAFUNWA AS DIRECTOR-GENERAL FOR MEDICAL RESEARCH INSTITUTE
The Nigerian Institute of Medical Research (NIMR) has appointed Professor John Obafunwa as its new director general, with President Bola Tinubu’s approval.
Professor Babatunde Salako, whose term ends on July 23, 2024, is succeeded by Professor Obafunwa.
The appointment is effective as of July 24, 2024, according to a statement released on Monday by Chief Ajuri Ngelale, Special Advisor to the President (Media & Publicity).
Subsequently, President Tinubu thanked Professor Salako for his contributions to the country.
After earning his medical degree from the University of Lagos in 1980, Professor Obafunwa focused on anatomic pathology, or the morphological study of diseases, and graduated in May 1987.
Later, in Scotland (1991), he pursued a subspecialty in forensic pathology and graduated from England (2004) with a law degree. He is a member of numerous professional associations in the UK, USA, and Nigeria in addition to having multiple additional academic credentials.
Before coming back to Nigeria in November 2004 to take up a position as Professor of Forensic Pathology at the Lagos State University College of Medicine (LASUCOM), he had worked in the UK, Bermuda, and the Cayman Islands. He was once the vice-chancellor of Lagos State University, the chief medical examiner for Lagos State, and the provost of LASUCOM. He served as the Royal College of Pathologists’ (UK) International Regional Advisor for Sub-Saharan Africa prior to his appointment.
He has written chapters for textbooks and other scientific papers.
His areas of expertise include anatomic pathology and forensic endomology. He is currently conducting research at the University of Nebraska, in the United States, on taphonomy and forensic entomology.
The President expressed his expectation that the new Director-General will use his vast experience and credentials to further advance the goals of the NIMR, which include directing research into diseases that are important for public health in Nigeria, creating mechanisms for disseminating research findings, and offering facilities and an enabling environment for health research and training in collaboration with state and federal ministries of health.
